Synopsis
In the aftermath of the great war, the boys were captured and sent into the hellish Mantlerealm mines. Jayce became their leader, taking punishment for others and helping them grow into capable men. Tash, the only boy in the realm to evade capture, secretly helps them while Hagla continues to hunt him. They believe the Pillywiggin will free them when she comes of age. Tash, however, has discovered there is more to that prophecy.

He took punishment for others and helped them grow into capable, smart, kind men. The witch noticed. She brought him to her twisted castle and cursed him so he cannot move against her. As he left, he took a book on dark magic. He knows it could turn him, but he has to find a way to survive—and protect the boys. Did he steal the book, or was he set up to take it?

The only boy in the realm who escaped capture in the great war, Tash learns from his grandfather in dreamwalks. At great risk, he sneaks in and brings the guys supplies. Discovering a birthmark in the crest of Fairydom on her neck, he swears to protect her. It is prophesied that a girl with this mark will one day free the boys; he later learns that the prophecy says much more.

Parker, Leo, Beav, LB and Max—the core of the tribe. Tech, invention, surveillance, espionage, strategy: they are key to every successful mission run in the mines. On the surface, the boys are obedient under guard of their captors—but actually they run a sleek operation to keep everyone alive and prepare for their escape.

Parker

Imprisoned as a toddler with the other boys, Parker was forced to mature early, taking on the role of an adult at just five years old. While Jayce leads the Shadow Boys—a name they gave themselves to lift their spirits as kids, like the Avengers—Parker is the top commander directly under him, although they are more like partners, which is Jayce’s method of leadership.A member of the elite A Team, Parker also runs B Team, directing members X, Romeo, Echo, Oracle, and Mother for the execution of the most critical missions. He embodies the highest level of performance, seamlessly transitioning from strategic command to high-speed physical action.

LB

LB

The smallest boy, he has a knack for invention and getting into trouble. Together with Max, he leads the team’s computer and technical work. He is constantly working on a plan.

Max

Max

Working closely with LB, Max helps lead the technical side of the boys’ plans and explores ways to make their underground operations work. He runs the music for all the missions—it keeps the timing.

Leo

Leo

Leo trains more than anyone. He hasn’t been in any fights yet; they are so heavily guarded that fighting back would be deadly, but his skills almost match Jayce’s. A philosopher, he is unusually positive.

Beav

Beav

Beav is the counterpart to Leo. Skeptical, rough, and really strong. He and Leo are nearly opposites, and the best of friends. Beav is a gentle giant.

Hagla

Hagla

Hagla will greet you warmly. She’ll offer you an éclair. She keeps lovely guest rooms. None of this is good news.
